The Data Center Services group installed over 50 ION 7700 and ION 7330 metering devices from Victoria, BC-based Power Measurement. The ION 7700s capture power quality events and energy data at high-voltage 12.47kV to 480V ; transformers, uninterruptible power supply UPS ; outputs and the static switches that transfer loads between UPS systems. The ION 7330s gather load data from the automatic transfer switches ATSs ; and 20 power distribution units. The meters are linked via Ethernet to a server in the data centre running PEGASYS energy management software from Power Measurement. PEGASYS also extracts information via Modbus protocol from 80 CutlerHammer Digitrip 910 breakers. Zahora and his team display alarms, generate reports and analyze waveforms at five PEGASYS workstations. "We're creating custom screens where we can `walk' around our on-line electrical diagram and look at a batch of meters, " said Zahora. "We can see all the meters in a substation at once, instead of calling up each meter individually." One challenge was back up for the UPSs during maintenance work. The UPSs were already in "parallel redundant configuration" such that if one UPS were down, its load would be redistributed automatically among the remaining UPS modules. Yet, if Zahora's group had to perform maintenance on the UPS system cabinet, the whole UPS system and the computer equipment fed from that UPS system would have to be shut down -- an unacceptable situation. In addition, the automatic transfer switches ATSs ; that feed the UPS systems were other single points of failure. "We installed another large UPS system that could back up any of the five existing UPS systems, as well as the monitoring system that could track where the loads were, " explains Zahora. "This gave us the flexibility to move loads around with the use of static switches, if we had to do maintenance or react to a failure. Now, if we want to work on an ATS, we can move the loads, take down a UPS, and not worry about any downtime." The next goal was capturing more information about voltage spikes and other power quality events. Many alarms, for cases such as voltage imbalance and over-current, are reported by PEGASYS to the LexisNexis building automation system, which instantly notifies maintenance of any urgent problems. "We've configured the software to send messages describing the condition and location; such as, for example, `UPS 10 has a transient.' In the future, I'll also set up the software to call my pager and send text messages directly to me, " says Zahora.
